DIY Paper Mache lamp shade
This Ikea hack is so easy and effective. I got these STRÅLA lights in Ikea https://www.ikea.com/ie/en/p/strala-cord-set-white-20371467/ I couldn’t find a nice lampshade so I decided to make one. These paper mache lamp shades are so much fun to make and you can customize them to suit your home. You can get the bulbs here ttps://www.ikea.com/ie/en/p/ryet-led-bulb-e14-200-lumen-chandelier-opal-white-70409953/
YOU WILL NEED:
- A template for your lamp shade I used a plastic bowl and an old sweet container
- PVA glue
- Newspaper cut into strips
- Cling Film
- Paint brush
Start by mixing two parts PVA glue to one part water. Cut your newspaper into small strips. Place cling film over your bowl before you apply any glue or newspaper. This will make removing you paper mache a little easier when it is dry later. Using a paint brush, brush the PVA glue onto the cling film. Place a strip of newspaper and repeat this process. I did three layers of newspaper.
Leave paper mache to dry overnight. Once dry, gently remove the paper mache from the plastic bowl. I used a butter knife to separate the plastic bowl from the paper mache.
Trim any excess paper from the bottom of the lamp with scissors. This is the fun bit, decorating your lamp shade. I painted a coat of white paint on my lamp shades first. I made & added wool pom poms. See how to make pom poms here https://aproudhome.ie/pom-pom-curtain-tiebacks/
Using a scalpel cut a hole into the top of the lamp. Use the light fitting as a guide. Draw around the fitting with a marker.
Of course I had to add wool pom poms to my lamps. I used a large darning needle to sew on my pom poms. I painted my lamp white with black polka dots and inside the lamp bubblegum pink!
The other lamp is painted Yellow Ochre acrylic paint with mini black pom poms. I glued the pom poms on using fabric glue.
PLEASE NOTE USE A LOW WATTAGE BULB WITH THESE PAPER MACHE LAMP SHADES AND DO NOT LEAVE LAMPS ON UNATTENDED FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME.
